tiny how-to nerdy videos about spooncarving (and a magazine, too)

@Spoonesaurus is a video archive on Instagram detailing small, technical aspects of carving wooden spoons.
Spoonesaurus Magazine is the world's only print magazine dedicated to the art of spooncarving.

Find Out
@spoonesaurus is the brainchild of Matt White (@templemtn_matt) and myself, Emmet Van Driesche (@emmet_van_driesche). Driving back from a gathering of spooncarvers, we lamented that there didn't seem to be any gathering place for all the intimate, nerdy details about how to carve spoons that we ourselves had gleaned from reading a number of blogs, watching longer videos on YouTube and following dozens of Instagram feeds for years.

We decided to start a project that would give us a platform for sharing what we know in manageable, one minute videos (very unscripted, raw and accessible) on Instagram. These videos are designed to address specific, particular elements of the process. They are captured in the moment when they occur to us, and collectively have built to what we hope is a valuable resource for other spooncarvers. If you have particular topics you would like us to address, please be in touch.

Spoonesaurus is celebrating its third year! There will be three Spoonesaurus Gatherings this year: the first will be hosted at a venue near Matt's house in southern New Hampshire on Saturday, March 26. This is a FREE day of hanging out and carving with fellow spoon nerds. This year, in deference to Matt having a newborn in the house, we will be holding the gathering at a nearby cafe in a renovated barn. Anyone traveling from a distance is welcome to camp out in Matt's heated workshop (with myself!) the night before. Be in touch with Matt for further details. The 2nd Spoonesaurus Gathering will be at my home in western Massachusetts, and will be some Saturday in June, to be determined. Same deal, it's free, and you are welcome to camp the night before and after if that would be helpful. The 3rd Spoonesaurus Gathering will be a camp out, location and exact date to be determined, in the middle of September!

We are also so proud to announce that Spoonesaurus Magazine just published it's sixth issue (so that's seven, counting the early proto-issue!) This quarterly magazine provides resources, interviews and information to fellow spooncarvers. It is print only, ships all over the world, and you can subscribe at www.spoonesaurus.com. For now, I don't have a good way to provide back issues to people who are just now subscribing, but I hope to do so in the future. It is a complicated task to offer back issues, and one that doesn't make sense given how lean we need to keep the operation.

One idea is as worthless as another until you actually do something about it, and then it is the action, not the word that matters.  --Orson Scott Card
